Hallo Tukkies

Most of you have realized by now that canoeing is definitely the best sport by far. Unfortunately a number of our fellow canoeing enthusiasts have drowned on rivers and dams during the past years. It has therefore become increasingly difficult to qualify for races, especially if you are a novice. Fortunately the qualifying system has been revisited and it is not so difficult anymore. I would like to run through the steps with you and if you have any questions please contact me.

THREE STEPS AWAY!!
|
1. Do the LEARN TO CANOE programme at LC dammetjie.
|
2. After finishing the LTC and you feel confident that you can paddle five big rounds at the dammetjie without swimming, you can contact me and you do a BASIC PROFICIENCY TEST (BPT). The BPT consists of an oral and practical test and includes some swimming!! Sorry guys & gals I know it is cold in winter!! You are now qualified to do timetrials and enter races on dams and marinas ONLY.
|
Note: Although it is not prescribed it is desirable for you to do at least three dam races and/or timetrials before undergoing the river proficiency test.
It is now time for some serious paddling and it is only a test away. Once again you contact me and you undergo the RIVER PROFICIENCY AWARD (RPA). It consists again of an oral and practical test. The practical will take place on the Klip River on a 5km stretch. After successfully completing the RPA you are now allowed to enter any Non A River Race. The river ratings are given on the yearly race calendar and in your CANOEING SA SAFETY BOOKLET but if you are not sure you can contact me.
Note: The oral test will consist of questions from the CANOEING SA SAFETY BOOKLET.
|
WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU TO THE RPA?
- Boat, paddle, seat-make sure all the nuts and bolts are tight before getting on the water, always take some extras with
- Buoyancy in the front and back
- Splash cover
- Duct tape-put it under your seat
- Water and something to eat (like bar ones) on the river
- Your CANOEING SA SAFETY BOOKLET
- R50-00
- Most important your SECOND!!

NEWEST RULING!
Once you have been declared river proficient, you are proficient for life. The rules have been changed during the last week or so and if you are a seasoned paddler that have not been paddling for two years you do not have to do a proficiency test anymore. The responsibility lies with you to make sure that you are fit and proficient to do a race. The exact rules regarding the qualifying for races etc will be communicated to you as soon as I receive it.
Train hard, I'll see you on the water!!
